Using and caring for your hearing aids

Widex. Manufacturer of the World’s Finest Hearing Aids. The path to confident hearing starts here.

Widex ITE & CIC cleaning tools

Widex ITEs and CICs are provided with a set of tools. This kit differs depending on the type of aid, but can include the following:

  • The battery stick has a magnet to help place the battery in the aid (1)
  • The wax removal tool helps remove wax from the hearing aids (2 & 3)
  • The small brush is for general cleaning (4)
  • The soft cloth is for general cleaning (5)

Daily cleaning of ITEs & CICs

Please note that an ITE/ CIC hearing aid is unique to you. Your hearing aids may differ slightly from the illustrations.

Clean your hearing aid daily with the soft cloth. Inspect it for damage and check to see if any of the microphone holes are blocked.

Wipe the hearing aid, using an anti bactieral wipe or cleanser (e.g. OtoVita wipes or spray).

If microphone holes or vents are blocked, this will reduce hearing aid performance and comfort. It is important to take the appropriate action to clear the blockage or ask your dispenser for guidance.

Weekly cleaning of ITEs & CICs

Clean around the sound outlet with the small brush.

Use the small wax removal tool to remove wax from the short vent (if you have one). Open the battery door, remove the battery and push the wax through the hearing aid.

Use the long wax removal tool to remove wax from the full length vent – you can push wax through the aid.

Open the battery door and use a wax removal tool to clear the microphone opening. Do not push anything into the microphone itself.

Leave the aid to dry thoroughly overnight or in a drying pot (contact your dispenser for information or supplies of OtoVita products).

Replacing wax guards

In normal circumstances, Widex wax guards MUST be used at all times.

Never re-use a wax guard – always use a fresh one.

Take a fresh wax guard from the packet and insert the hooked end of the holder into the wax guard to be replaced.

Pull the wax guard straight out – do not twist it.

Turn the holder around and push the fresh wax guard firmly into its housing.

Remove the holder – the new wax guard will remain in place. Discard the stick with the old guard on it.

If the new wax guard fits loosely, discard it and try again.

Turning on/off

Widex ITE & CIC hearing aids are incredibly simple to turn on and off. The battery door functions as the on/ off switch.

CIC aids: Fully closing the door switches your hearing aid on. Open the door by lifting it with your thumbnail to turn the hearing aid off.

ITE aids: ITEs have a sliding door lock system to take account of slightly bigger batteries. Fully closing the door switches your hearing aid on – to close the door, close it in the normal way and then slide it towards the hinge to lock it closed. Reverse the process to open the door and to turn the hearing aid off.

Changing the battery

Open the battery door, either by lifting the battery door (CIC aids) with a fingernail or by sliding it away from its hinge and then lifting it (ITE aids).

Remove the old battery with your nail or battery changing magnet.

Discard the old battery safely.

Remove the tab from a new battery to activate it. (It may take a couple of minutes before the battery is fully activated: your hearing aid will not work until the battery is activated.)

Place the new battery in the battery door/ holder with the plus sign (+) facing the same direction as the plus sign on the battery door (CIC aids), or facing towards you (ITE aids). You may find using the battery magnet is useful.

GENTLY push the battery door closed in a reverse of the opening process.

If the door does not close easily, the battery may be the wrong way around and should be turned over.
